As of May 25, 2008, when citing a paper in NIH applications, proposals, and progress reports that falls under the Policy, and was authored or co-authored by you or arose from your NIH award, you must include the PubMed Central reference number (PMCID) or the NIH manuscript submission number. See Reminder Concerning Grantee Compliance with Public Access Policy and Related NIH Monitoring Activities for more information.
Find PMCID in PubMed
Using the Greenblatt Library’s link to PubMed
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/sites/entrez?otool=mcglib
To find the PMCID reference number, use the AbstractPlus display for the search results page.

The PMCID reference number is located on the lower right corner of the article record.
Note: In the Summary and AbstractPlus display PubMed displays their PMID on the left, which is a unique identifier number assigned to each publication as it is added to PubMed. The PubMed ID is not the same as the PMCID.
PubMed records will also include publications, that is in the PMC but the full text will not be available for public viewing in PMC until after the embargo period. Available date will be listed after the PMCID.
Find PMCID in PubMed Central
Go to PubMed Central at http://www.pubmedcentral.nih.gov/
The PMCID reference number is noted on the search results page.

The PMCID should be cited as:
List the PubMed Central reference number (PMCID) at the end of the already-required full journal citation for the paper in applications, proposals and reports.
Examples:
Cerrato A, Parisi M, Santa Anna S, Missirlis F, Guru S, Agarwal S, Sturgill D, Talbot T, Spiegel A, Collins F, Chandrasekharappa S, Marx S, Oliver B. Genetic interactions between Drosophila melanogaster menin and Jun/Fos. Dev Biol. 2006 Oct 1; 298(1): 59-70. PMCID: PMC2291284
When PMCID Reference Number is not available:
If a manuscript was submitted through the NIH Manuscript Submission System (NIHMS) and a PubMed Central reference number is not yet available, include the NIH Manuscript Submission System reference number (NIHMS ID) instead
Example, before PMCID is available:
Cerrato A, Parisi M, Santa Anna S, Missirlis F, Guru S, Agarwal S, Sturgill D, Talbot T, Spiegel A, Collins F, Chandrasekharappa S, Marx S, Oliver B. Genetic interactions between Drosophila melanogaster menin and Jun/Fos. Dev Biol. 2006 Oct 1; 298(1): 59-70. NIHMSID: NIHMS44135
