Purpose Statements

The Library is an integral unit of the Medical College of Georgia, the University System of Georgia's health sciences university. Priority customers are the students, faculty and staff of the Medical College of Georgia. Other customers include students, faculty and staff of the University System of Georgia, as well as Georgia's health professionals, patients and their families and general citizens.

The purpose of the Library is to support the institution's overall mission of providing outstanding education programs, leading edge research and scholarship, and excellence in health care by:

  • providing convenient access and linkage to worldwide scholarly information in the health sciences
  • promoting and contributing to emerging trends in scholarly communication and clinical information systems
  • advocating for open access to and fair use of information and intellectual property
  • promoting continuing education and lifelong learning

The Library will work to fulfill its purpose through:

  • commitment to a customer-centered library environment and assessment of user needs
  • acquisition, organization, management and preservation of collections and information
  • resources appropriate to the institutional needs
  • education of users in information retrieval and management
  • provision of value-added products and programs
  • partnerships with all academic and clinical units on campus
  • collaboration in a variety of cooperative networks in the state, region and nation for resource sharing
  • support of remote users, distance learners, outreach and continuing education
  • anticipation and response to a rapidly changing information environment

Purpose Statements for Library Departments

Business Services provides effective and efficient administrative support to the Director of Libraries, Assistant Director of Library Operations, and library faculty and staff. The department is responsible for managing fiscal planning and implementation; facilitating personnel procedures; coordinating facilities and building security; and gathering and reporting statistics.

Content Management acquires, organizes and provides access to traditional and emerging forms of scholarly communications and content, including print and electronic resources in a cost effective manner. The department plans for the acquisition and implementation of new organizational methods, systems and technologies and assures bibliographic integrity of collections data of the Library's integrated system. The department manages information organization, storage, retrieval and transfer to include cataloging, serials, collection assessment and development, interlibrary loan and document delivery, and maintenance and development of the Library's web presence. The department also supports the statewide GIL project through content coordination of one of the state's four server sites.

Education and Information Services assumes leadership in providing quality user-based support of the information needs of the MCG community. This department provides a user-centered single point of contact for Library services at the Library Information Center and provides educational services for information literacy, lifelong learning skills, curriculum, clinical and research support

The Learning Resource Center of the Georgia Statewide AHEC Network partners with the Greenblatt Library and other units of MCG to provide an electronic infrastructure offering Library resources continuing education, administrative communications and enhanced distance learning applications to students, preceptors and AHEC centers throughout the state of Georgia.

Historical Collections & Archives is committed to acquiring, organizing, preserving and making available historical collections related to the Medical College of Georgia and the history of the health sciences. This unit is dedicated to delivering quality service in support of historical and institutional research to Medical College of Georgia affiliates, health science professionals and the community.
